The main component of limestone, the mineral calcite, is calcium carbonate (CaCO3), a sedimentary rock. It often develops in shallow, warm, and transparent marine environments. Typically, it is an organic sedimentary rock made up of shell, coral, algal, and faecal waste. It may also be a type of chemical sedimentary rock created when calcium carbonate from an ocean or lake crystallises.
